Stewardship

Everything we do, after we say, "I believe"
(including our use of the tongue!)

James, the brother of Jesus, talks about the tongue (James 3:1-12). He calls it a small member that can boast of great things, and compares the tongue to a fire and a world of wickedness set among our members contaminating the whole body. (This can mean the individual or the corporate body.)

In verse 8, James says that the human tongue can be tamed by no man. . . . it is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. Then he says, with it we bless the Lord and Father and with it we curse men who were made in God’s likeness!

I have heard several uncomplimentary stories about First Lutheran from non-member sources. They were not stories that would attract anyone to First Lutheran. In fact the information was inaccurate and rather condemning. Stories change when passed from person to person, like with the game “Telephone.” The person who begins the ‘message’ doesn’t recognize it by the time it goes around the circle and returns to them.

To be good neighbors, let’s talk like good neighbors. Tell others about the things we do that show love for one another. And if you have a concern about anything, please contact a church leader and get the straight goods. Leaders, if you don’t know the answer, find out.

As part of our stewardship of our daily lives, let’s use the gift of speech to bless others, not bring harm to them. As Thumper’s mother taught him, “If you can’t say somethin’ nice, don’t say nuthin’ at all.” (From Walt Disney’s Bambi.)
