Global Community

As a family of God, First Lutheran Church of Crystal members are called to awaken the spirit of Christ. . .in our world by nurturing a compassionate partnership with diverse cultures in order to strengthen our common faith for the enrichment of all people in Christ Jesus.  To this end, we are actively involved in the following:

Fair Trade Equal Exchange:  As part of Lutheran World Relief, First Lutheran Church of Crystal has supported small farmers and communities in developing countries around the world by selling/buying Fair Trade Equal Exchange coffee, tea, hot chocolate and baking cocoa since the year 2000.  Money from the sale (most at cost) of these items is given to Global Missions.  If you would like to know more about this, check out the website at http://equalexchange.coop/.

Seeds of Support Mission: Haiti:  Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  After the devastating earthquake in 2010, St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie, MN began Seeds of Support and partnered with Redemption Lutheran Church of Jacmel (Pasquette) to make a difference.  We work alongside local Haitians building specific projects, teaching, learning and praying together.  Members of First Lutheran Church of Crystal have traveled to Haiti to help support this effort.  If you would like to help, please contact pastorpeter@standrewlu.org.

Global Missions:  First Lutheran Church of Crystal has partnered with the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) through a church located in Mubi, Nigeria.  We support their work in outreach areas, healthcare, malaria prevention/treatment, and clean water and wells.  Members of First Lutheran Church of Crystal have traveled to Nigeria and have supported their pastor’s visits to the United States.  Their church was burned in November, 2014 by the Boko Haram.  Many members had to flee but many have now returned and are worshiping in a temporary structure.  We give thanks to God for his protection and for the strong and faithful witness of our partners in Nigeria.

Over the last five years, First Lutheran Church of Crystal has participated in the ELCA’s Malaria Campaign.  The goal was to raise $15 million; this goal was exceeded.  People were educated, bed nets distributed, individuals were tested and treated, and pregnant women were provided with preventive medication.  First Lutheran will continue to support this effort through gifts to the ELCA World Hunger which has a long history of supporting health related work.

God’s Work – Our Hands:  First Lutheran Church of Crystal members work with other ELCA church members for a time of service at Global Health Ministries.  We sort, inventory, fill orders and even pack sea containers with medical equipment and supplies that is shipped all over the world to support Lutheran health care systems.  Check out the website at www.elca.org/dayofservice.
