What if transformation means returning to our roots
of being really good neighbors again?
We’ve talked a lot about ‘Transformation’ at First Lutheran over the past couple of years. It’s the issue of our time here in this church. I suspect the mere mention of the word transformation causes some of us to be fearful of what it brings; mostly of the unknown. But, what if I offered you the comforting idea that transformation of us as a church might mean a return to something so basic, so simple that we’ve overlooked it over the years. What if being transformed meant we got back to becoming neighbors, really good neighbors again?
This year, this whole year of 2010, I would like to propose that we focus delightfully on being “good neighbors” to each other, to the community around us, and to the larger church. Simple, but powerful. So powerful it’s worthy of some study, some new thinking, and some very new neighbors.
We’re re-inventing evangelism this year. A new group of persons have formed an evangelism team again. We’re going to focus on what it means to carry the good news about Jesus to those around us as if they were our neighbors in need of some tools, some advice, some talents we have.
First, it means coming to understand just who our neighbors are. Next, it means doing some self-assessment of just what we really have to offer them. And finally, it means choosing the best way we can find to put their need and our talent together into some concrete acts of friendship and neighborliness.
These three steps will be approached from one perspective: we’re here to do some good to bring about good. It’s what good neighbors do.
Soon you’ll be seeing signs, wearing buttons, being offered events to attend; not because it’s an obligation but because we want all of you to know the joy of being a good neighbor. Watch the newsletter for updates and invitations.
Come on over! There’s someone we’d love to have you meet.
Peace,
Pastor Folkerts
